Music

Intent

At Wheatfields Infants' and Nursery School, we aim to build the foundations for a life-long love of music through our Music Curriculum and the provision of a range of musical opportunities and experiences for our children.

We strive to be a musical school which has music at the heart of school ethos. Through music, we seek to create a school that is happy, inclusive, vibrant and positive! We nurture and celebrate the achievements of our pupils and seek to develop the confidence of our children through a love of music. We maintain strong musical links between with our local community and Music Hub to provide enriching musical experiences for our children.

Music Tuition

At Wheatfields Infants’ and Nursery School, visiting peripatetic teachers from Hertfordshire Music Service offer tuition for pupils in school time for piano, voice and recorder.

Lessons can be shared for 30 minutes (two students) or individual for 20 minutes (one student).

The fees for lessons offered by Hertfordshire Music Service are as follows for 2026-2027:

  • Individual 20-minute duration £17.32 per lesson
  • Shared (2 students) 30-minute duration £12.99 per lesson

We offer subsidised tuition for children in receipt of pupil premium funding and also have school keyboards which we are able to loan to families to support independent practice. Music books can also be provided by school to ensure each child is equipped for lessons and practice.

If you would like further information or to sign up for voice or keyboard, please visit:

Extra-Curricular

We encourage children to participate in extra-curricular musical activities by offering the following activities:

  • Choir is open to children in Reception and KS1 is run by Mrs Jolly each week on a Friday lunchtime.
  • An instrumental ensemble run by music specialist Mrs Dobson takes place each week on a Monday lunchtime. For 2026-2027, this will be a string ensemble made up of 15 children for three half terms (Aut 1, Aut 2 and Spring 1.) A second group will have the opportunity to take part (Spring 2, Summer 1 and Summer 2).
  • ‘Sing with a Smile’ with Mrs Thomaidis after school on Thursdays and Fridays.

The choir and the instrumental ensemble are free to join although children need to sign up via the school office. Instrumental hire through Hertfordshire Music Service may be required for the string ensemble. There may be waiting lists. School subsidies are available for children who are in receipt of pupil premium and wish to take part in ‘Sing with a Smile’ or require financial support to hire an instrument for the string ensemble group.

We aim to give children the opportunity to perform at concerts, assemblies and venues within the community. Furthermore, musical workshops are organised throughout the year to enrich the curriculum teaching and to provide opportunities for children to experience live music.
